The History Of Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle, with its rich tapestry of history, dates back to the late 17th century. It was extensively remodelled in the mid-19th century by Sir Charles Barry, the architect behind London’s iconic Houses of Parliament. Barry transformed it into the stunning Jacobethan masterpiece we admire today, blending classical symmetry with Gothic grandeur. The castle has been the ancestral seat of the Earls of Carnarvon since 1679 and continues to be a vibrant part of England’s heritage.

Highclere Castle and Downton Abbey

Highclere Castle garnered international fame as the primary filming location for Downton Abbey, lending its grand exteriors and opulent interiors to the Crawley family’s fictional home. The series featured numerous rooms within the castle, from the lavish dining room to the elegant drawing room, allowing viewers worldwide a glimpse into the stately British aristocracy of the early 20th century. Walking through Highclere, you may feel a familiar déjà vu as you find yourself in the very spaces where the show’s memorable scenes unfolded.

The Earls of Carnarvon and Highclere Castle

Highclere is not merely a filming location but a living home. The current Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, the 8th of their line, reside in the castle and actively participate in its maintenance and public activities. Their stewardship ensures its preservation for future generations, blending modern living with the weight of history. This authentic vibrancy makes a visit to Highclere an intimate, living history experience rather than one confined to the past.

The Egyptian Exhibition at Highclere Castle

One of the castle’s most intriguing aspects is its Egyptian exhibition, a tribute to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s passion for Egyptology. Famously funding and uncovering the tomb of Tutankhamun alongside Howard Carter in 1922, the 5th Earl’s legacy adds an exotic dimension to Highclere’s English heritage. The exhibition showcases a striking collection of Egyptian artefacts and replicas, offering a fascinating diversion for those exploring cultural history.

Architectural Marvel: Remodelled by Sir Charles Barry

The distinctive architecture of Highclere Castle is the work of Sir Charles Barry, lending a unique blend of Jacobethan style — an architectural statement combining both majesty and mystery. Barry’s renovation in the 1840s introduced elements that enhanced both the castle’s beauty and functionality, echoing his genius shown in the design of the Houses of Parliament. Today, Highclere stands as a testament to his architectural prowess and vision.

The Estate’s Gardens: A Design by Capability Brown

Enhancing Highclere Castle’s beauty is the expansive landscape designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, one of England’s legendary landscape architects. His 18th-century parkland designs offer visitors sweeping vistas, serene walks, and intricate gardens that capture the splendour of nature. These carefully curated grounds provide a picturesque setting to Highclere, making it as captivating outside as it is within.
