Walking Routes

Explore Axbridge with Your Pooch

Here are some of our favourite dog walks starting directly from The Lamb, perfect for discovering the local parks and public spaces that Axbridge has to offer.

1. Cheddar Reservoir Circular
Start/End Point: The Lamb Inn, Axbridge
Directions: Head west from the pub toward Cheddar Reservoir. Follow the flat, wide path around the reservoir’s edge — this loop is mostly level and easy to walk. You can turn back at any point or complete the full circle before returning to the pub.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~1 hour, easy.
Highlight: Waterside walking with wide views of the Mendip Hills — great for dogs who enjoy open space and a gentle stroll. Dogs must be kept on a lead around the reservoir to protect water quality and wildlife.

2. King’s Wood & Cross Plain Hilly Walk
Start/End Point: The Lamb Inn, Axbridge
Directions: Walk or drive a short distance to the forest car park off Winscombe Hill and enter King’s Wood. Follow the woodland trails up toward Cross Plain for beautiful elevated views across Somerset, then loop back down via connecting footpaths to return to the pub.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~1.5 hours, moderate (some uphill sections).
Highlight: A mix of shaded woodland paths and open grassy plains with great panoramas — keep dogs on a lead around livestock in the fields.

3. Crook Peak Rooftop Walk
Start/End Point: The Lamb Inn, Axbridge
Directions: From the pub make your way toward the paths up to Crook Peak, starting via King’s Wood if you like. Follow the marked routes up to the summit for stunning 360° views of the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels. Descend back down via a different footpath (or retrace your steps) to complete the loop back to the pub.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~2 hours, moderate‑challenging (hilly).
Highlight: Spectacular elevated views across the region — a great option if you want a more active walk with panoramic scenery.
