The History Of Highclere Castle
Highclere Castle boasts a rich history that is as intricate as its architecture. This magnificent country house is the ancestral seat of the Earls of Carnarvon, with the estate having been owned by the Carnarvon family since 1679. Originally a medieval palace, it was converted into a country house in the late 18th century. However, the most significant transformation occurred in the 1840s when Sir Charles Barry, celebrated for his design of the Houses of Parliament, remodelled the Castle into the Jacobethan masterpiece we see today, seamlessly combining classical symmetry with Gothic grandeur.
