Newbury’s History
Newbury has existed since Saxon times and became a prosperous centre in the Middle Ages, thanks in part to the Kennet and Avon Canal. The town also saw two major battles during the English Civil War, leaving a lasting mark on its identity.
Historic landmarks still standing today include the Town Hall, the Cloth Hall, and the prominent Clock Tower in the town square. St Nicolas Church, built in the early 1500s, is an architectural highlight, notable for its Gothic styling and memorials, including one to the famed “Jack of Newbury.”
A visit to the West Berkshire Museum brings these stories to life, offering free exhibitions that cover everything from geology and industry to wartime tales.
