Walking Routes

Here are some of our favourite dog walks from the pub, each designed to showcase the natural beauty around Rowberrow.

1. Rowberrow Warren Woodland Walk
Start/End Point: The Swan Inn, Rowberrow
Directions: From the pub car park, head down School Lane and continue until you enter the woodland at Rowberrow Warren. Follow the main woodland paths along the stream and through the trees — you’ll find lots of side paths to explore. Loop back along the woodland edge toward School Lane and return to The Swan.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~1–1.5 hours, easy‑moderate.
Highlight: Peaceful woodland walking with a babbling stream — great for dogs who enjoy sniffing and splashing about. Keep dogs on lead during hunting season (Oct–Feb) and when ground‑nesting birds are active (Jan–Jul).

2. Dolebury Warren & Iron Age Hill Fort
Start/End Point: The Swan Inn, Rowberrow
Directions: Walk down School Lane and turn right on the A38 until you spot the path leading toward Dolebury Warren. Follow this up steep steps and well‑used paths to the top of the Iron Age hill fort, then take the circular trail around the summit. Descend back into the woods and follow paths returning toward Rowberrow and the pub.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~2–3 hours, moderate (some steep sections).
Highlight: Broad open views over North Somerset and the Mendips, plus historic landscape features — dogs should be kept under close control around livestock.

3. Black Down & Beacon Batch Circular
Start/End Point: The Swan Inn, Rowberrow
Directions: Cross the lane from the pub and follow paths into the woodland, then continue out toward Beacon Batch at Black Down. This route rises gently to the high open spaces of the Mendip Hills with panoramic views. Loop through the downs and head back down through woods and fields toward Rowberrow and the pub.
Estimated Time & Difficulty: ~2–3 hours, moderate (longer and some uneven ground).
Highlight: Expansive hilltop views across countryside and heathland — perfect if you want a longer scenic walk for you and your dog.

Please note: Be mindful of countryside code, grazing livestock and changing weather conditions to ensure a trouble-free walk.
