The History Of Highclere Castle
Highclere Castle has a vibrant history stretching back several centuries. Originally built on the foundations of a medieval palace, the structure as seen today was heavily remodelled in the 1840s. Commissioned by the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon, the renovation was spearheaded by the renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, who also famously designed the Houses of Parliament in London. The castle’s Jacobethan style, a revivalist architectural form, is distinguished by classical symmetry interwoven with Gothic grandeur, showcasing a mesmerising façade that has enthralled visitors and directors alike.
